Role Playing FAQ

Role-playing? What is it?
Role playing is when you assume the role of one or more characters and, with other people, collaboratively create stories. The player and the participants of that role play determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization and the actions succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines. Their choices affect the shape, direction and the outcome of the game.

What is this room about?
Please look at the Monastery page to refer to the setting and the environment.

How do I start role playing?
First you have to create an account. See this question on how to create one.

Who are the rest of the people in this room?
If you click on the 'PF' tag next to their name, you will be able see their character profiles. A new window will open up to show you more details. This also allows people to stay in the room.

How do I have a profile as well?
Go to the menu with your username in it and press preferences. It will automatically take you to your profile page, where you can fill it out and save it.

I heard I have to submit a character profile in order to be considered eligible to role play. Is this true?
Yes. We are enforcing this because everyone should be able to see what your character looks like and know a little bit about them, such as magical abilities.

Can I submit a picture for my character?
Yes. Please look at this question regarding the answer to character pictures.

My image has changed and I want to change it in the hosted profile! What do I do?
The same rules apply as if you were submitting an original picture. Just email Lag.Com or Ryvnn with the new picture, a link for it and who to credit.

How do I create a character?
You have to fill out a character profile sheet about your character. To do that, go to the menu with your account name on it and click 'characters'. It will say 'You may add another character profile by clicking here.' Click on it to fill out your character information.

When making your character, take into consideration that the moderators do check your characters. If they are questions about it, we will either ask for an explanation or ask you to change what is in question.

So how I do this well?
  • Control only your characters actions, not Billy, Bob, and yours.
  • Do not post too much at once--other people need to react.
  • Wait for someone else to post. Also remember that you are not typing out a novel, or your memoirs.
  • Learn some synonyms. It might be a sword, but it's also a blade, a tongue of steel, a deadly weapon, a flash of silver . . .
  • Use spell check. It is your friend. There are plenty on the World Wide Web or in Microsoft Word.
  • Since this is a close knit community, get to know the people that you are role-playing with. Look at their profiles so you know what you are getting into.
  • Take your character seriously. Don't just add character traits on them to make them look cool.
  • Don't just sit back and watch other people; be active in the role play. This place is based around everyone, not just one group of people.
  • Interact with the environment.
  • Your character should react to new people that are coming into the environment. Do you instantly know the new kid in school, or the new guy at work? No. Your character should form relationships with others players just as people would in real life.
  • Your character does not know everything you do. Just because you read someone's profile does not mean your character does. This would be considered meta-gaming. Avoid doing this at all costs.
